The development of porsche’s first turbocharged version of the model 911 began in 1972. A prototype of the first 911 turbo was unveiled at the frankfurt auto show in the fall of 1973 to test the market potential of the design. The production version was released at the paris auto show in 1974 and was finally put into production in europe for the model year 1975 and marketed simply as the “911 turbo”. The first exports didn’t hit the shores of the us until 1976 and were initially badged as “turbo carrera” for a short period of time. Soon the designation was changed to type 930 and was carried through the remainder of it’s production. In order to handle the higher power output, the type 930 was given a suspension revision, larger brakes, larger wheels, wider tires and flared fenders to accomodate the extra beef. A large rear spoiler was added, known familiarly as a “whale tail” or a “tea tray”, to help create downforce at the rear and push more air through the engine. Lastly, the new susperstar of the porsche line-up received a stronger 4-speed gearbox. By the 1985 model year, 928 sales had risen slightly, but question remained whether it would supersede the 911 as the company’s premier model. Porsche re-introduced the 930 to the japanese and u. Markets in 1986 with an emission-controlled engine producing 282 ps (207 kw; 278 hp). At the same time porsche introduced targa and cabriolet variants, both of which proved popular. This particular 930 turbo is a two owner, numbers matching porsche that was purchased new in germany in 1985 and was imported into the united states. It was federalized for the u. The first owner had it for 17 years in los angeles and then willed it to his brother who has owned it since that time. It has spent the remainder of its life here in northern california. It has been meticulously maintained and serviced with good service records to show. The most recent repairs to the 930 include the entire air conditioning system being rebuilt, brake hoses replaced and a set of new tires. The silver metallic paint is original with the exception of the front left fender being repainted. There are a few scratches in the paint as to be expected, and a small dent in the front valance. The black leather interior shows well with the sport seats having normal wear with no splits in the bolsters. The leather dash and rear shelf are showing some separation. The 930 comes with all of its tools, spare tire, jack and air pump. It also comes with all of its books including two owners manuals, one in english and the other in german. The 944 turbo s was a special 1-year only car. Automotive magazines touted it as the fastest 4-cylinder in the world. Back to back track tests against the porsche 930 showed that the 944 turbo s was actually faster…and half the price (still nearly $50,000 u. Porsche rightfully proclaimed: “not since the 911 turbo have we transferred a race car so directly into a road car.” these turbo s cars were a direct descendent of porsche’s 944 turbo cup racing program. They received the coveted m44/52 turbo engine, which produced 247hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. Furthermore, the cars received the famed porsche suspension package, internally designated as the m030 option. This package included height adjustable koni shocks, stiffer torsion bars/torque tube, stiffened sway bars, and lightweight club sport forged alloy wheels. Porsche’s 928 s4 4-piston abs braking system was also included. To handle this power, the turbo s got a strengthened transmission (1st and 2nd gears were hardened). An external oil cooler was added for longevity and reliability. A new high-friction clutch was installed to allow for quicker launches and more precise shifts. Finally, a limited slip differential (with 40% lockup) was included. The 2. 5 liter power plant, based on the race proven european turbo cup engine, was “hand assembled in zuffenhausen alongside the 911 series and the 928 s4 engines”. Although the s shared the same displacement as the standard turbo, it boasted 247 horsepower thanks mainly to its larger kkk k-26 #8 turbocharger. Indeed, porsche vastly improved the s’s turbocharger technology. Along with the larger turbocharger unit, which subsequently increased boost pressure to 1. 82 bar, output increased thanks to a modified dme system, improving air and fuel mixtures, among other things. This particular 1988 951 turbo s with a basalt black exterior and a black interior has been with the current owner since 1998 and has extensive service records dating back to that time. It has been extremely well maintained and cared for and with only 64,355 miles on the odometer it shows. Total production numbers for the u.
