The fifth-generation 996 911 turbo is not only the fastest-ever street-legal 911 of its era, it’s also the most refined. And the urge to push the needle deeper, to tap into its extraordinary acceleration, is very difficult to resist. Visually, the turbo is easily the most radical of the 996-generation 911s. The wheel arches are swollen by 2. 6 inches, a bi-wing is created by an active rear spoiler that rises 2. 4 inches when the car reaches 75 mph (contributing to downforce), and aggressive air-inlet vents in the rear fenders feed air to the intercoolers. Vents situated behind the rear wheels, adding to the turbo’s meaner, more squared-off appearance. The nose is rounder and longer to accommodate a third radiator behind the larger air intakes. These changes reportedly increase cooling capacity by 50 percent. The headlights, unique to the turbo, arch down into the bumper and utilize xenon illumination for high- and low-beam lighting. Porsche says the extra scoops, vents, and wings only bring the drag coefficient up 0. 02 to 0. 32 relative to the standard 911 carrera. The x-50 powerkit increases the 911 turbo’s engine performance from 420 hp at 5,000 rpm to 450 hp at 5,700 rpm. The maximum torque is now available at 3,500 to 4,400 rpm. The maximum torque value of 560 nm, already offered by the series engine at between 2,700 and 4,600 rpm, is available in the power-enhanced 911 turbo at between 2,700 and 5,600 rpm. So its power can be called upon in an extremely wide range of revs. An estimated acceleration speed of 0 to 60 is 4. 2 seconds. With the turbo staying in constant warranty, maintenance and servicing has always been properly adhered to which currently includes a new set of tires. The development of porsche’s first turbocharged version of the model 911 began in 1972. A prototype of the first 911 turbo was unveiled at the frankfurt auto show in the fall of 1973 to test the market potential of the design. The production version was released at the paris auto show in 1974 and was finally put into production in europe for the model year 1975 and marketed simply as the “911 turbo”. The first exports didn’t hit the shores of the us until 1976 and were initially badged as “turbo carrera” for a short period of time. Soon the designation was changed to type 930 and was carried through the remainder of it’s production. In order to handle the higher power output, the type 930 was given a suspension revision, larger brakes, larger wheels, wider tires and flared fenders to accomodate the extra beef. A large rear spoiler was added, known familiarly as a “whale tail” or a “tea tray”, to help create downforce at the rear and push more air through the engine. Lastly, the new susperstar of the porsche line-up received a stronger 4-speed gearbox. By the 1985 model year, 928 sales had risen slightly, but question remained whether it would supersede the 911 as the company’s premier model. Porsche re-introduced the 930 to the japanese and u. Markets in 1986 with an emission-controlled engine producing 282 ps (207 kw; 278 hp). At the same time porsche introduced targa and cabriolet variants, both of which proved popular. This particular 930 turbo is a two owner, numbers matching porsche that was purchased new in germany in 1985 and was imported into the united states. It was federalized for the u. The first owner had it for 17 years in los angeles and then willed it to his brother who has owned it since that time. It has spent the remainder of its life here in northern california. It has been meticulously maintained and serviced with good service records to show. The most recent repairs to the 930 include the entire air conditioning system being rebuilt, brake hoses replaced and a set of new tires. The silver metallic paint is original with the exception of the front left fender being repainted. There are a few scratches in the paint as to be expected, and a small dent in the front valance. This 2005 porsche 997 carrera cabriolet is a one owner california car with only 4970 miles on the odometer. Incredibly the owner purchased the carrera and never found the time to drive and enjoy it.
